Industrial Scale Solar Power

Significant solar power plant projects are being considered in locations like California and New Mexico where there is significant sunshine. It is therefore reasonable to consider the overall effectiveness and practicality of solar power plants on a large scale. How much can solar power be used to provide for America’s energy base?

The answer proposed is fairly simple. Dollar for dollar solar power plants can’t compete with the raw power output of a combustion based power facility. The energy trapped in coal, natural gas, and diesel fuel is very concentrated and very potent. As long as these fuels can be obtained for a reasonable price, they will outperform the renewables market for many years to come.

Combustible fuels can be thought of concentrated and stored solar energy from millenia before and in that sense are not really a bad thing. Without combustion, we would be without many modern technological developments, and we could not support our industrial base.

Most of our modern comforts and commercial activities are based on a foundation of several industries. This foundation includes processing raw materials like aluminum, iron, copper, steel, and more. This includes plants that produce machinery, tools, cars, airplanes and all the gadgets and gizmos we use in everyday life. This also includes heavy agricultural machinery and sawmills required to provide basic products to our economy.

Simply put we use a lot of electricity in our regular daily lives. This energy consumption is the foundation of our economy and our way of life and it is supported by burning fossil fuels.

And here is the fundamental problem with large solar power plants. They can’t supply adequate energy to support America’s industrial base. This does not mean they are irrelevant or undesireable. It just means solar power systems make the most sense when used in residential and small commercial applications where energy consumption is moderate.

As an example, a 500 MegaWatt combustion power plant can fit in a relatively small space, less than a 1/4 square mile without much difficulty. When considering a photovoltaic solar power plant, nearly 1,140 acres (almost 2 square miles) of solar panels would have to be installed to equal this same capacity. This is 2 square miles of actual solar panels, and does not account for the mounting and maintenance space. Being that solar panels provide peak power only 5 to 7 hours per day, then apples to apples we’re only getting the total output with more than eight times the space!

In locations that make sense, we need to include solar power solutions as part of our energy portfolio. Our modern combustion technologies deserve recognition. Modern technology in combustion power plants create clean and efficient power with very high reliability 24 hours a day. The highly concentrated energy source of fossile fuels is simply too great to ignore as it relates to powering America’s industrial base.

4. If you have a wood burning fireplace and use it frequently in the winter to cut down on the power bill that is a great way to save. However, and this is more of a precautionary tip than savings tip, there are dangers you should know about, like the fact that if you use the fireplace a lot, you will get a creosote build up that is very flammable. If you do not have the chimney cleaned yearly, you run the risk of chimney fires. Another thing to watch for, is the screen and cap on the top of the chimney, if either is damaged or missing get it fixed as soon as possible. Birds sit on chimneys for warmth and it is not uncommon for them to become overcome by the fumes causing them to fall into the chimney, and that can cause smoke and fumes to back up into the house.

Air Conditioning

If you live in a hot country, or even one that merely has hot summers, it is just lovely to be able to sit in your home without sweltering. In particular at night as being too hot can prevent you from getting a decent night’s rest. Likewise, when you are at work. We all know the pleasure of walking into a cool, air conditioned building, like a bank on a hot summer’s day.

Total air conditioning like this used to be the prerogative of office blocks and the very wealthy, but it is becoming more general now. In fact, if you already have ducting all the way through your house to be used in association with a central heating system, a total air conditioning system could cost as little as $4,000.

A total air conditioning system like this will usually be adequate for seven rooms in one or two zones, which could be two small bungalows next door to each other or a house and a garage or shed. This is in direct disparity with split systems which only cool one room - every time you go out of the room, you let cool air out and warm air in, which makes the air conditioning system work more and costs you more money.

Total air conditioning has other less well-known features too. It reduces the humidity in a room or house by drying the air as it is returned to the unit for cooling and advanced units have filters with additional functions. The more sophisticated the system, the more germs, bacteria and other substances (like pollen) the built-in filter will do away with.

Because these filters can get rid of airborne substances they can significantly reduce a person’s affliction from allergies. Good air filtration can help asthma and hay fever sufferers very much, if the filters are kept clean.

In general, a total air conditioning system is divided into two major components - an outdoor condenser and compressor and an indoor evaporator in an air circulating system. The air circulation, or air handling system filters and dehumidifies the cooled air, and delivers it, via ductwork, to several rooms. Total air conditioning is frequently much quieter than split air conditioners, because the noise of the latter’s compressor is so much closer to where the cool air is needed.

It is much better to take the ducting into account at the design stage of a new house as part of its heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, but it can be added later. A good HVAC system should be designed to supply adequate cooling, heating, and ventilation, taking into account such factors as the size of the building, the efficiency of its insulation and the regional climate.

Fiery Arenal Volcano Of Costa Rica

With luggage and camera gear packed in the van by 8 in the morning my new friends and I on my photography tour are off to our first destination, promising to be an outstanding adventure. The excitement is high with everyone getting to know each other and talking cameras and pictures on this their first day.

We are on our way to Arenal, an active volcano in Costa Rica, but there are a few stops along the way. First, we stop in Sarchi, famous for its tropical furniture, where magnificent, brightly decorated ox carts are made in an eighty plus year old water powered factory. From there, we drive to the little mountain town of Zarcero where the focal point is the old wooden church with its much-photographed double row of topiaries leading to its entrance. You can fill your camera’s memory card just at these two places with the colours and patterns in Sarchi and the fantastic shapes of the topiaries in Zarcero.

Luis, our driver, is very familiar with the many potholes that make Costa Rica famous, so he cautiously makes his way along the road while most everyone else, on 2 or 4 wheels, pass us by. The number of wannabe Formula One drivers in Costa Rica is staggering. There is even a bus driver who has been known to have passengers find religion and speak directly to God on his overland route.

After our planned stops and lunch in La Fortuna we are now just a few miles from our lodge at Arenal. As we leave the main highway we find ourselves on a road that is one continuous pothole. It is January and the rainy season has just ended so most roads are in poor condition but what is unique about this road is that it was constructed from crushed lava rock.

Rounding a curve we see a clearing beside a tropical river and there is the perfect cone shape of Arenal Volcano! Those who have never seen a volcano are stunned at the sight.

The point of the cone is cloaked in puffy white clouds with a beautiful blue sky as a backdrop. We immediately stop and quickly leave the van attaching cameras to tripods. Some of us wade into the river for a better image while some shoot from the riverbanks getting a different perspective.

Of course being this close to an active volcano could be very dangerous but Arenal is quite predictable, a low risk. The lodge is only one and a half kilometers to the base of the volcano and two kilometers to the top of the cone and needless to say, any activity attracts your attention.

While unpacking and getting settled in, Arenal speaks. It is a great roar, smoke and gas billowing many hundreds of feet into the sky and the sound of the rocks tumbling down the slopes. After the eruption, the Mantled Howler monkeys are extremely vocal but we do not know if they are protesting the roar of the eruption or just answering back.

While sitting in the lodge dining room enjoying our dinner Arenal speaks again. Everyone had been told of the many photo opportunities in Costa Rica but who would imagine eating dinner and having something like this happen? And this was only our first day of the tour!

Most of us do not get much sleep for the first two nights. Instead, we find some comfortable chairs in the common area outside our rooms and attach cable releases to our cameras and put them on a tripod. From past experiences I decide to use an 80-200mm lens set at 80mm and an aperture of f8, the camera shutter set at “B” for time exposure.

The activity of the small flare-ups at the cone and the lava flowing down the opposite side makes me think that a time exposure of more than 20 minutes could produce an ugly yellow blob of light and if there are no eruptions after this time I will close the shutter and start another exposure. In using a cable release the exposures are perfectly sharp and Arenal cooperates by putting on quite a display while we are there.

Arenal is the first adventure in Costa Rica for my photo group. With another eight days of photography everybody is looking forward to the next destination that is going to be just as exciting.
