The following seem to be some of the best landscaping methods which can be done in your own home garden.

1. Make sure that you design the landscape in a way that is retains water in a useful manner. This doesn’t only go for water that comes from your sprinklers but also storm runoffs.

By having this kind of set-up, you do not spend a lot on watering your plants and you also help keep your community’s water supply at bay.

2. Make sure that you only use fertilizers in a responsible manner. Some people become trigger-happy when it comes to using fertilizers on their landscapes.

While putting in too much fertilizer can be detrimental to the environment, using organic fertilizers or choosing plants that are well-accustomed to the local environment will help in curbing the problem.

3. Take it easy on pesticides and weed killers - just like fertilizers, pesticides and weed killers can do more harm than good if used irresponsibly.

4. Water all of your plants on a set schedule.. You might think about watering your plants in the early morning rather than in the afternoon as plants will retain the water for a longer period of time when watered this way.

While considering the time for watering the plants may seem like a small thing, it translates to something big when the water supply is put into the equation.

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

There are lots of different types of jobs that will require the use of a skip to dispose of waste. If you are making plans to renovate your home, be it a new property or a building you have lived in for many years, then you will need to find a reliable environmental skip hire firm that understands what is required.

They come in many different sizes; not only will it need to be adequate for the products and material that you want to dispose of, it also needs to be able to sit securely on your property during the duration of the work that is planned. This is a vital point as today many homes have very small front yards, you may need to place the skip on your driveway and leave your car on the street while the work is being carried out.

Not all skips are made to be used with the same types of waste. Specific materials need to be separated. For example there are skips for builders waste, mini skips for small jobs, and also large industrial sizes. It is better to overestimate your needs rather than go for an option that is too small.

Be aware that specific compounds and materials can be prohibited from being thrown into a general skip. Such items are usually hazardous in nature like old batteries, electrical equipment, asbestos, food, gas cylinders, and liquids.

When calling up a hire firm, be sure that you tell them clearly the type of items you will be disposing of.

Aiding Environmental Causes Via Recycling Rainwater

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Rainwater harvesting is a new way to help the environment and save a buck or two doing it. It’s a new craze among home builders, but also among businesses who are using rainwater to be used in everything from coolant to actually being put into consumables, after being purified of course.

Even simple systems of funneling water into a bucket for watering plants can help the cause. A simple solution would be to set a bucket under a gutter drainage pipe to collect rainwater. More intricate designs might route the water to a covered storage bin for long term periods of time. Farmers have been known to use such processes in irrigation to drastically reduce the price of using local water to keep crops nourished.

More complex systems might route rainwater into a storage bin, where it is then used by a dishwasher or by a washing machine. In this instance you would want to install some type of filtration system to catch anything in the rainwater that might not be sanitary. In addition, use soap or detergent as you normally would. You’ll save on the water bill and help the environment out.

In some cases, rainwater has been used instead of city water for inclusion in directly consumed liquids. A business that passes regulations may use rainwater instead of city water to make different beverages ranging from soda to fermented drinks. This method is more work, often needing the help of a professional to verify laws are being followed and the rainwater is purified well enough.

Even some jobs center around the use of rainwater. A good example would be with a firefighter, whom probably fills reserve tanks with rainwater or water from a local water source. It would be too costly for a volunteer fire department to use city water to fill tanks with each simulation or real fire call. Thus, reserve tanks are filled with rainwater, lake water, and pond water if they are available. City water is used as a last resort.

Some arguments state that using city water isn’t harmful to the environment like other more extreme matters. The fact is that water facilities take a lot of energy and man power to operate. If you can use rainwater with low-energy systems to get work around the house done, you will be conserving energy. With more energy saved, the environment will be less strained.

In Conclusion

A family that works on fun projects together stays together. Start a rain harvesting project in your spare time. It’s not something that will need your complete attention, but rather a fun hobby to do when the family has free time. It will be fun and rewarding at the same time.

Your house is finally clean and tidy and you sit down and put your feet up for a minute with a nice cup of coffee by the side of you and you pick away at your cake. You are tired but it’s that good kind of tired when you know you’ve done a good day’s work and you have no regrets about it. A feeling of contentment settles on you and you look around you with satisfaction.

A magazine lies in front of you appealingly within reach and you give in and pull it to you, intent on enjoying your well-deserved rest. The top cover story springs out at you, entitled ‘Country Home Decor’. Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had only just seen an article on some stylish country home decor or turning your house into a small country haven in another magazine and it had interested you.

There is page after page of the magazine filled with what can only be categorized as the most perfect examples of country home decor you can imagine. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine’s pages. However, you could definitely go for that beautiful table runner without a problem. And if you donated all your modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn’t really be splurging, would you, since you’ve done your best for charity and donated all these things so unselfishly?

And what about swapping those jazzy blinds for something that’s a bit more in the country home decor style. And while you’re going about it, perhaps you could even swap that ugly lampshade you received as a house-warming gift for something a little more country.

The only thing that is left for you to do now is to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labours and gaze with open pride upon your newly redecorated home. Black and White Ideas for Stylish Home Decor

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

When people start thinking about living room decorating ideas and making changes to their residence, whether it be one or two rooms or even the entire house, the first thing that usually springs to mind is ‘what colour’. Usually, people choose colours that they are fond of or those which match pieces of their existing furniture. When looking for living room decorating ideas, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, when used in decorating shows style and creates drama. Top interior designers say that every room in the house could benefit by using a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and stabilizes a room. Adding sophistication, black is certainly a colour that requires attention. Living room decorating ideas for a home using black may include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to add definition to the focal points in a room. Black is just one of the colours that stands out or makes a statement, but it is definitely one of the most outspoken!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant environment. This combination can be used in any room in a home making it a sophisticated space. Black and white are often used in contemporary interior design and frequently used to accent other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to conceptualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic colours.

The floor is a great area to start when you’re having living room decorating ideas. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful checkered pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another beautiful idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using pattern stencils of the opposite colour for decoration is also really stunning. These all are fantastic ideas for re-vamping a room.

Can you imagine anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white makes an ideal background for decorations such as paintings framed in black. What magnificent living room decorating ideas! Elegant black window surrounds or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an air of sophistication. Perhaps a glass-topped table with a black iron trim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a room using only black and white.

A bedroom decorated using black and white would be beautiful stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-frame, covered with a striped black and white duvet or eiderdown. For the pillow cases, you could use either all black or all white and could add throw cushions in the other colour.

A nice leather black or white armchair or sofa in the corner would certainly accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a sophisticated piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the stark white walls would definitely look really neat and tidy and you could spruce it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the living room decorating ideas need a little more colour to complete the look, perhaps a throw or a cushion in a bold colour like red or gold for the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to accent the room. There are many ways to decorate a home. However, finding the one that suits you and those who live with you is very important. It’s nice to do something extreme and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite a while.

Shower Curtains in Fabric

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

So, one day, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became all the rage. But, like most fads, common sense resurfaced and the fashions that once were, have come back as they do. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are easily available from most stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t rush to get rid of your old glass doors just yet. The cleanliness and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly established with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by them and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll find, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are complacent and will smile when questioned about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the benefits of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to discourage mould.

The biggest convenience of all, is the easy cleaning granted by glass shower doors. However, as the proponents of fabric shower curtains will also say to you, glass doors have their downsides as well, the biggest of which being that if you allow the cleaning of the doors to slide for even one week, dark stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have great determination.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular wipe-down, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will begin to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a contented grin on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one massive why fabric shower curtains are still a firm favourite with loads of people. Have you ever tried changing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within a span of five years, unless that is you take a very large sledgehammer to it by accident.

So, now you understand the reason behind that mysterious smile and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of style. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re thinking of swapping from your glass shower doors to the more convenient, disposable fabric shower curtains don’t be put off by having to get started

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become simpler, and if it’s not, just swap one pair of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel better!

Implements To Make Your Garden Grow

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Back in the time before the invention of tractors, growing a crop was seriously hard work. Tremendous amounts of laborers and farm animals were needed to maintain a field or garden. Fast forward to today! Farm implements combined with a tractors 3 point hitch will allow you to produce the same results while cutting the cost of manpower. In the age of the Internet, you can research, watch demos, and even order these attachments directly online and have them delivered without getting out of your chair.

Today, most tractors provide a 3 point hitch system coupled with a PTO hook up to make short work of even the most difficult farming and gardening tasks. This allows you to connect plows, post hole diggers cultivators, disc harrows, tillers, fertilizer spreaders, and planters just to name a few, but let’s not jump ahead. Some farming implements are going to be powered by the PTO of the tractor, while other are just connected and pulled behind the tractor. If you have a tractor with a front end loader then you will also be able to connect a multitude of other attachments to the front of your tractor.

The other way to get more from your tractor is to have a front end loader. Utilizing your tractors hydraulics to power a universal quick attach grapple bucket attachment that connects to the loader arms is beneficial. Although these are not normally used for gardening, it is worth mentioning because if you purchase a tractor most people want to get as much use out of them as possible.

As a rule of thumb, there are certain tractor implements that should be considered as standard equipment when using your tractor for producing a garden. Farm Plows are one on these must have attachments. A plow will make is easy to flip over the topsoil to create a good environment for your crops to grow in abundance. Plowing your garden is one step that cannot be skipped, and there are many different garden plows to fit any size tractor.

After you have plowed your garden, you will need to break up the soil until it is suitable for planting. You can accomplish this by using either a disc harrow, or a pto tractor tiller. The disc harrow is simply connected to the 3 point hitch and ran over the plowed area until the larger pieces of dirt are broken up and the soil is workable with your hands. Some gardeners who use a disc harrow prefer to leave some small clods to help keep the ground from washing away in heavy rains.

Using a rototiller instead of a disc harrow is sure to save you time when getting your fields ready to plant. You can adjust the rear gate open or closed to fine tune to coarseness of your gardens soil. If you set it open, then you will have larger pieces of dirt that will not be broken up. If you close the rear gate, the tiller literally chops up the ground, then busts the remaining clods against the gate producing very loose soil for planting. One pass with a tractor tiller over your garden and you are ready for the next step in creating a beautiful garden your plants will love.

Using a garden bedder to create a raised mound of soil for you to plant in is very important to this process. Taking the time to adjust your bedder properly will help your seed to have the right environment to flourish in, and will also make planting your seed a whole lot easier. If you get it just right, you can almost eliminate the need for a furrowing attachment depending on what you are planting. It is great to use a bedder with “tire sweeps” on the outside to pull up the compacted ground from you running over it with your tractor.

Using a 3 point hitch cultivator is key to keeping unwanted weeds from destroying an otherwise healthy crop. Morning glories and a host of other weeds will literally ruin a garden in the early stages if you cannot keep them in check. Everything Attachments offers a cultivator that with the right options can be used as a bedder, a furrowing attachement to put a furrow in your rows, and then be used as a cultivator. Having three gardening tools in one in this instance is not a bad thing as it does all three exceptionally well.

Before you drive down to your local Tractor Implements store, if you are looking for American Made Attachments for your tractor . . . try the Everything Attachments website
