How Do I Get Rid Of Centipedes Without Chemicals Or Money?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Among the most horrific creatures I have ever had the displeasure of having in my home (besides the in-laws… joking) are house centipedes. Spiny, creepy, and fast as can be, these things have almost stopped my heart on multiple occasions. I was luckily never stung by one, though I am certain that one of my daughters was while she slept. But the sheer “tingles down the spine” factor brought me to the conclusion that I had to get rid of centipedes without waiting another day!

In hindsight, I have no explanation of we lived with them as long as we did. More than six sightings a night (at least) was commonplace. I would even label it an all-out infestation. I hope you can’t relate, but if you can, then you too are likely feeling pretty desperate to get rid of centipedes fast!

Here’s the issue I was looking at. My kid was only 13 months old at the time, and both my wife and I agreed that using toxic chemicals throughout the house was simply not an option. As I’m sure you know, one-year-olds can cover a lot of ground, love to put things in their mouths, and are generally some of these least careful creatures walking the planet! So we grown-ups had to take all the precautions, and insecticides were definitely out.

In addition, we had heard time and time again that killing centipedes was only a short term solution, if even that. They would come back, and we knew it. It seemed fruitless to blow all of our money and put our family’s health in jeopardy - based on an approach to getting rid of centipedes that was flawed to begin with. Extermination doesn’t actually solve the problem, it just masks the symptoms.

Still, something had to be done. Luckily, we learned a way to get rid of house centipedes that was not only non hazardous, inexpensive, and fast, but also 100% permanent in nature! It came down to understanding the root cause of our centipede infestation, which is crazy simple, yet absolutely true. Here it is… the centipedes totally DUG our home! They loved it. They had plenty to eat and drink, and lots of comfortable hiding places to give them privacy and keep them safe.

For us, the answer was a no-brainer. We had to make it IMPOSSIBLE for them to live with us!

How did we do it? Simple, really. We learned about their diet and their overall tendencies. We dried up key “moist spots” throughout our home using a dehumidifier (though a typical house fan would have worked just fine), we sealed off little cracks around the baseboards using a bit of caulk. We did a number of extremely simple, yet very specific things that removed their food supply from our home (this solved all of our other bug problems, too!) We learned all the specifics in a powerful e-book, which was actually came highly recommended by friends.

Perhaps you are where I was, and are desperate to get rid of centipedes fast. All I can tell you is to not let that desperation lead you into a bad decision. From everything I’ve seen, extermination is a bad decision. By simply removing their food and water, and sealing off all the places in which they like to hide, sleep, and breed, you can get permanent results that begin to happen for you immediately.

Don’t Over Spray Your Bugs

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Sometimes I sort of feel sorry for an insect that falls prey to the homeowner who saturates him with a ton of insecticide. They must get some type of pleasure from drowning one bug with all that mess but is that really necessary?

I’m not really sure where most people learned how to spray but obviously the motto of the class was more is better. Actually the best place to learn the best way to use any product is found on the container itself. Pest products now come with a tiny booklet attached by glue and you can find just about any information in that label that you’ll need. It is a bit tricky to read and there are some things that have set places where they are always found but amounts of the product to use can be all over the place. You may use different amounts based on the bug, place you’re treating or or infestation levels. Keep looking until you find something that closely resembles where you are in your treatment steps and follow those specifics. You may not think that the label is serious when it claims that such a small amount is all that is needed to treat large areas or will kill so many pests. Years of study have gone into making these concentrates and when they say the minimum amount will do what is stated it is true and has been tested on so many different situations.

The other issue with treating responsibly is how often we spray. Again we can find our instructions on the label. Each spray can be different but it is important to do what the label says. There is no set place that this information can be found but it may something like DO NOT RETREAT for 14 days.

This should be a clue as to how long this product lasts and although you may not be real sure on re-treatment times in case of some bugs not dying, you can be assured that you still have active ingredients at work for at least 30 days so perhaps re-spraying is not the best option.

Giving your treatment time is never a bad thing but too much spray in and around where you live and play might be. Should you have additional needs don’t reach for the sprayer automatically since you know your treatment is still there silently waiting for the bugs. Other options are available like baiting or sticky traps. Have confidence that the spray is still working and remember to always follow the label.
