Fixing, Producing, Repairing And A DIY Guide To Painting And Decorating Sash Windows

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Sash windows can be fun to repair, so here is a DIY Guide to painting and decorating sash windows. After removing the lock, and old putty with a putty knife, or even a butter knife, along with any other sealants that may have been put on over the years, sand the wood of the windows. It does not need to be perfect, but sand it as smoothly as you would like to see the paint over it. Then take a damp cloth and wipe the loose sand off, making sure it is clean to paint.

You can protect the window glass from painting it or splashing it by using masking tape or a painters tape. Just tape around the edges of the glass where it meets the wood. But if you do paint the glass, no worries, it will wipe off wet or you can use a straight edge razor to remove it if it dries.

You may want to use a primer first, as it will seal the wood and your paint will be easier to apply and it will last longer. Start painting somewhere in the middle of the window and work your way out towards the ends and corners.

The raised bottom sash, on the center mullion is where you might want to start. Then you can paint outwards from the center. Next paint the sides of the window, on the vertical mullions. Go to the tops next, to the horizontal ones. Some of the top of the vertical mullion may be hidden, so if you cannot paint it all, just leave it, and paint only the exposed part. You may find an easier method of where to start. It really depends on the preference of the painter.

When the paint is dried, and your window looks great, it is time to decorate it. Be imaginative. You can buy window treatments and draperies, or you can make them customized to your window. Either way, you will need to measure the dimensions of the window to make sure you have enough material for the homemade draperies, or you will need the measurements for the store-bought ones. A more modern look will show mini blinds or wooden blinds only. Sometimes curtains are not used at all. Or you can use a combination of light-weight curtains for a breezier look. Or a combination of blinds and curtains.

Whatever you decide, a DIY Guide to painting and decorating sash windows will be used again in the future for your other windows.

The Art of Sash Window Repairs

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Sash window repair specialists are really a unique breed of window artists. Being able to repair the structure of a sash window is very much like restoring historical art. Sash windows are unique because of their stacked design, making the window appear to be made out of separate smaller pieces of glass.

These windows, which were common in period homes like Victorian and Georgian homes, are rooted deep in history. This is especially true in the southern parts of the country. These windows are signatures, often designed by the original home builders.

If it’s so difficult to fix shouldn’t we just replace them with a more modern window? While this is always an option, it’s not one that should be considered lightly. Sash windows are becoming rare, historical, and are full of character that you just can’t get from a modern window. Replacing these windows isn’t likely to provide better insulation nor is it likely to provide a better aesthetic value to your home.

Bringing in sash window repair specialists is like bringing in a historical window expert. He or she will be able to evaluate the window in question and provide you with the best possible solution.

Pane replacement is not terribly time consuming, provided that the right type of glass is on hand. If you have several panes to be replaced, you will probably end up with glass panes that reflect various light levels, making the view through each pane a little different.

Whatever the repair ends up to be, the important thing is that you and the sash window repairs specialists were willing to preserve a historical window and keep your home’s character intact. This is a significant part of preserving our history throughout the world. The simple things that represent a time in our history shouldn’t be easily discarded.

Disposable Drink Coasters and Environmental Impacts

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Slate and Artsmith - Disposable beverage coasters are generally used in bars and restaurants as a cheap and effective way of keeping condensation off of the tables. They can consist of any inexpensive material, although usually it is something that absorbs water. The most common disposable coaster is a cocktail napkin slipped under a beverage.

The good news is that most of the materials that would make a good disposable coaster are biodegradable, such as paper or cork. That means even though they create a lot of unnecessary trash, it won’t take much for nature to re-incorporate them back into the environment.

The real problem with these coasters is that they are a symptom of a philosophical error in our society’s way of thinking. Standing at the threshold of mechanization, we are a society that produces, and consumes. It’s a matter of simple convenience, disposable items don’t have to be washed, they don’t have to be taken care of, and they can simply be tossed away.

The nature of trash is a marr on modern society. We are a disposable world, where its cheaper and easier to manufacture something that gets thrown away forever than it is to simply reuse an item. This causes us to slowly erode our natural resources over time.

In this way, our culture has become a mass producer of garbage, albeit temporarily useful garbage. And instead of developing new thoughts and innovations, we instead waste our time with the mindless production of consumables.

As mechanization continues, disposables will become easier, cheaper, and more readily available. Instead of looking for the next great drink coaster, we are going to search endlessly for the cheapest, ugliest, and most disposable coaster. In this way we will make our world ugly, and pathetic. In effect, we will be developing a disposable world.

This article was written on behalf of PebbleZ’s line of natural stone drink coasters. Their collection includes a wide variety of absorbent sandstone coasters, polished marble pieces, and stunning slate and travertine accessories.

Country Home Decor Style

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Your house is finally clean and tidy and you sit down and put your feet up for a minute with a nice cup of coffee by the side of you and you pick away at your cake. You are tired but it’s that good kind of tired when you know you’ve done a good day’s work and you have no regrets about it. A feeling of contentment settles on you and you look around you with satisfaction.

A magazine lies in front of you appealingly within reach and you give in and pull it to you, intent on enjoying your well-deserved rest. The top cover story springs out at you, entitled ‘Country Home Decor’. Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had only just seen an article on some stylish country home decor or turning your house into a small country haven in another magazine and it had interested you.

There is page after page of the magazine filled with what can only be categorized as the most perfect examples of country home decor you can imagine. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine’s pages. A quick look up from your magazine assures you that your own modest abode hasn’t changed somehow into one of those lovely country homes you were just looking at.

A heavy sigh passes your lips at this realization and you go back to gazing at the magazine spread. You had never thought that you were a person who could stand the whole country home decor style but now upon reflection you think you just might be able to.

Now without your even realising it, you find yourself marking the pieces that intrigue you the most, doing small mental calculations on how best to achieve the same effect but on the more modest budget that you have at your disposal. After all, it just wouldn’t do to fork out for that lovely Welsh dresser and have to go without your freshly ground whole bean coffee, would it?

However, you could definitely go for that beautiful table runner without a problem. And if you donated all your modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn’t really be splurging, would you, since you’ve done your best for charity and donated all these things so unselfishly?

And what about swapping those jazzy blinds for something that’s a bit more in the country home decor style. And while you’re going about it, perhaps you could even swap that ugly lampshade you received as a house-warming gift for something a little more country.

The only thing that is left for you to do now is to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labours and gaze with open pride upon your newly redecorated home. Furnished, naturally enough, in the best country home decor style that you could obtain from every source that you came across, like that first magazine which started it all off way back then.

Black and White Ideas for Stylish Home Decor

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

When people start thinking about living room decorating ideas and making changes to their residence, whether it be one or two rooms or even the entire house, the first thing that usually springs to mind is ‘what colour’. Usually, people choose colours that they are fond of or those which match pieces of their existing furniture. When looking for living room decorating ideas, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, when used in decorating shows style and creates drama. Top interior designers say that every room in the house could benefit by using a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and stabilizes a room. Adding sophistication, black is certainly a colour that requires attention. Living room decorating ideas for a home using black may include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to add definition to the focal points in a room. Black is just one of the colours that stands out or makes a statement, but it is definitely one of the most outspoken!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant environment. This combination can be used in any room in a home making it a sophisticated space. Black and white are often used in contemporary interior design and frequently used to accent other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to conceptualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic colours.

The floor is a great area to start when you’re having living room decorating ideas. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful checkered pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another beautiful idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using pattern stencils of the opposite colour for decoration is also really stunning. These all are fantastic ideas for re-vamping a room.

Can you imagine anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white makes an ideal background for decorations such as paintings framed in black. What magnificent living room decorating ideas! Elegant black window surrounds or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an air of sophistication. Perhaps a glass-topped table with a black iron trim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a room using only black and white.

A bedroom decorated using black and white would be beautiful stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-frame, covered with a striped black and white duvet or eiderdown. For the pillow cases, you could use either all black or all white and could add throw cushions in the other colour.

A nice leather black or white armchair or sofa in the corner would certainly accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a sophisticated piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the stark white walls would definitely look really neat and tidy and you could spruce it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the living room decorating ideas need a little more colour to complete the look, perhaps a throw or a cushion in a bold colour like red or gold for the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to accent the room. There are many ways to decorate a home. However, finding the one that suits you and those who live with you is very important. It’s nice to do something extreme and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite a while.

Shower Curtains in Fabric

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

So, one day, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became all the rage. But, like most fads, common sense resurfaced and the fashions that once were, have come back as they do. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are easily available from most stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t rush to get rid of your old glass doors just yet. The cleanliness and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly established with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by them and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll find, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are complacent and will smile when questioned about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the benefits of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to discourage mould.

The biggest convenience of all, is the easy cleaning granted by glass shower doors. However, as the proponents of fabric shower curtains will also say to you, glass doors have their downsides as well, the biggest of which being that if you allow the cleaning of the doors to slide for even one week, dark stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have great determination.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular wipe-down, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will begin to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a contented grin on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one massive why fabric shower curtains are still a firm favourite with loads of people. Have you ever tried changing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within a span of five years, unless that is you take a very large sledgehammer to it by accident.

So, now you understand the reason behind that mysterious smile and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of style. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re thinking of swapping from your glass shower doors to the more convenient, disposable fabric shower curtains don’t be put off by having to get started

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become simpler, and if it’s not, just swap one pair of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel better!

Office Decorating

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It’s been at least a year now since you moved to your new work place and officially took over your new office. At first, you were busy decorating a new home and learning a new job, but now that you’re settled in you start noticing again the same things that you noticed when you first took over your office.

The walls are a bland, neutral colour and are looking decidedly depressing. The sun streaming in through the industry-quality blinds is decidedly dingy and the furniture is just about as plain and worn as it can get. You figure that a decent amount of time has passed for you to start planning the redecoration of your office.

Naturally, before you start it’s always good to make certain that the powers that be won’t have a problem with your plans. And remember that it is only an office and you should treat your decorating plans as such.

Painting the walls a snazzy red colour possibly might not work. However, you could brighten things up a bit by repainting the walls a bright and airy colour that won’t be an eyesore to anyone, least of all you. Then you could always take down those ancient blinds that have been hanging there since the early’80’s and replace them with something more pleasing and modern.

On the other hand, if the whole of the office is done up in the same style with the same blinds hanging on every window, your stylish changes might not go down too well with your colleagues. So think twice before doing something that changes the whole look and dynamic of the entire office.

There are, however, simpler methods you can use to carry out your office decorating project without too much hassle to you and which doesn’t necessarily take too much thought. You can brighten up any room by placing a pot or two of flowering plants here and there around your office.

But, if you’re at all like me and you don’t have green fingers or if your presence is death to any plants near you, then maybe you shouldn’t bother with plants. You could however bring in some bright prints and hang them up on your walls. Or perhaps you have kids and they have painted some smashing pictures for you.

Kids’ paintings work well and will show your colleagues another aspect of your character. But, don’t get stressed out over anything though - you really don’t need a simple decorating project to add to the rest of your worries - an office decorating project should be fun and stress-free.

Remember, your office decorating project should not involve your upsetting the whole office, or yourself. It should be something that you can live with on a daily basis.

After all, you’re at your office most of the day, so it should be a place where you can feel just as relaxed as you are in your own home.
