Emergency Survival Food - Is Mountain House Food Best?

Monday, September 6th, 2010

When thinking of emergency survival food or starting to stockpile foods, here are a few things to help you get started.

*VERY Important! Am I storing foods for survival that I would eat on a normal basis…?

*Do I want only the BARE necessities in groceries…?

*… or do I want to dine like a king while eating my emergency survival food?

Make sure you are spending your precious dollars on items you are going to NEED and that you will want to eat.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the easiest way and surest way , to get the best combination of foods for your food storage plan is to purchase a ready made food reserves pack such as Mountain House Food packs which are readily available online.

The beauty of these food packs is that they last for YEARS so you don’t have to be worried about outdated foods sitting on your shelf..

*And then there is the question of…How easy is your emergency survival food to prepare?

Will you be able to prepare it even in difficult times - such as when there is no way to build a fire to cook it with?

*Also… How does buying survival foods fit into your budget plan?

Many folks are living on a shoestring budget so simply buying several extra cans of food EVERY time they shop is a way to stockpile food.

Stock up on sale items and watch how quickly your food storage can add up!

Just make sure you rotate your canned goods. It will not be good to enter a food shortage crisis with only outdated emergency survival food on the shelves either.

In Conclusion, determine whether you only need an emergency 72 hour plan, a 6 month supply of emergency food storage, a year’s worth of food or whether you want to have an ongoing and long term plan.

The possibility of a coming food shortage in America is VERY real so just make sure you have SOME sort of preparedness plan in motion.

We highly recommend having a plan that will help you survive for a month at the least. Preferably you need an emergency survival plan for a YEAR.

Longing For Self Sufficient Living?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

With pollution on the rise and economic troubles mounting, more and more people are becoming interested in self sufficient living. Let’s take a look at what it means to be self sufficient as well as things to keep in mind when considering transitioning to that lifestyle.

Self sufficient living is a phrase that refers to utilizing renewable sources to supply basic needs. For most individuals, this means a real change from depending upon city power and water. It also means becoming your own grocery store by growing a garden. For the purists, it involves learning to make things we use everyday - like soap and even clothing.

Why?… Some are adopting a more self sufficient way of life out of a reaction to the fast paced, high stress lifestyle typical in a metropolitan setting. They see this as a way to simplify their life and adopt a lifestyle that is healthier, both physically and emotionally. Others are doing it as part of a preparedness plan in light of increasing economic and political uncertainties as well as looming threats like natural disaster and even terrorism.

So what should we be thinking about when considering transitioning to a more sustainable way of life?

First, let’s consider our most basic need - food. Most people rely solely on the grocery store. Why not become your own supermarket by growing your own? You might not feel capable of such an undertaking, but there are plenty of good books on the subject to get you started. Even if you don’t have a garden area, start in pots for now - at least you’ll be getting started. The other important skill in providing for your food needs is learning to store that food. We’ll look more at methods to do this in future articles.

Another basic necessity of life is water. Again, most people rely on a community water source. Being self sufficient means you’ll establish a water source you can more predictably rely upon, like a well or spring. When doing this, keep in mind what your needs might be, including not only domestic home use, but also agricultural irrigation. For many people, such considerations necessitate having your own land where you can make such developments. We’ll get to that in a moment.

Water Sources - Another important consideration involves water. Where are you getting yours from? Sustainable water sources include springs, wells, and even creeks or streams - in which case you’d need to consider a filtration method. Keep in mind that there may be legal limitations pertaining to the use of surface water where you live. Many overlook the importance of this issue. Furthermore, it’s wise to consider the volume of water required to sustain not only your family, but also additional needs such as agriculture. You can see that there may not be a whole lot you can do about this unless you’re in a country setting with a considerable piece of land with water on it. This takes us to our final point.

For the ultimate in self sufficient living, why not consider relocating to a more rural setting. City life is the least conducive to becoming more self reliant. We’ll look more closely at this point in a future article. Many people are making their country living dream a reality with careful planning and persistence.

In closing, if you’re interested in becoming more self sufficient, it is possible. It just requires a commitment in terms of time and energy to make it happen. Self sufficient living will position you and your family to be prepared to take care of yourselves and help others in a crisis. It’s really the best way to live.

Decrease Your Energy Costs By Using Renewable Energy Resources

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

It is not surprising that none of us are happy when we see our electricity and gas bills continuing to rise year after year. The utility companies just turn around and blame it on the rising cost of fossil fuels all over the world.

Statisticians have predicted that if these rises continue for the next ten years or so then the natural gas costs and electricity costs will be far higher than the minimum wage in lots of countries. But there are a few things that we could do to prevent these costs from soaring and lower our overall costs.

In order to lower our energy costs and effectively live more comfortably we need to start using renewable energy sources at home. Even more so if we have to try and live to a tight budget.

Renewable energy sources will also be more environmentally friendly. According to studies global warming has increased due to the high demand for electricity. The most popular choice for producing electricity is still by thermal installations.

To protect the environment and our budget it is recommended that we use a renewable energy source to heat our homes. We could look at heating our water and our home by utilizing solar power.

Solar power can create electricity by using photovoltaic cells. Or another option would be to use wind turbines that harness the power of the wind to create electricity.

As more people convert their energy sources to renewable energy sources, the cost of general power should decrease. This is also a very good way to improve our environment in the process.

So by being responsible and utilizing renewable energy sources the world should be a much more environmentally friendly place for you and your children.

Greenhouses: The Wave Of The Future?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Greenhouses have been used in the past as a medium for hobbyists for their garden greenhouses but commercial greenhouses are becoming more and more prevalent as the world becomes more “green conscious” and energy efficient.

For example, universities and agricultural departments have built commercial greenhouses for their studies. These were only a larger version of smaller greenhouses made for individuals. Many elementary and pre-schools were also building greenhouses to teach and to educate the generations to come. These children and students were learning about our world, our earth, life, organic growing, eating habits and self-worth.

As our land becomes more obsolete many have sought to build greenhouses with the use of hydroponics so the soil is preserved and the vegetation grows healthier by transporting the nutrients directly to the root of the plants.

Recently, I have been reading about building acreage up, a system termed “eco building”. It is the process of building large high rises to use as greenhouses. By growing up and not out, we can use less land, and also generate crops without the dependency on other countries. One example of this is the tomato industry. South America dominants the growing of the tomato crop, however shipping and spoilage present problems. With Greenhouse structures going up and not out, we could capture some of the vegetable and industry back and regain some economic features for our own country. Also consider the world’s poor populations. If we can supply healthy vegetation to otherwise dry climates, we could feed a nation by building these greenhouse structures upward. And lastly, consider the oil crisis. Our development of corn and other types of fuel can only better our world.

The other day I was reading an article regarding the desire to create better food products by farming with organic fertilizers. This can be accomplished by attracting insects with particular plants that kill other insects that bring disease to the crop or plants. This quickly brought to mind how the generations throughout my life have always had a wave of “naturalists” that always wanted to get back to nature. Like myself, I have wonderful intentions. Now, it is time to do something about it.

We are all learning so much about the earth, the economy and about green sustainable living. Greenhouse plantations would conquer a lot of these issues very quickly. Building greenhouses could be the answer.

How To Choose Between Top Loading and Front Loading Washing Machines

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Both front loaded and top loaded washing machines have their advantages and disadvantages. Read on to learn, which model you should choose, when you are looking for a new washing machine.

The top loading washing machine is a classic in most homes in USA. It is difficult to find a housewife who has not used this model at some point. And it is also a great model for many reasons.

The top loaded model has a shorter washing cycle than the front loaded type, which gives you a faster washing time. It is also better for older people, because you do not have to bend down to load it. And the price for the washing machine is also cheaper.

But it does also have some disadvantages. Because of the use of an agitator, there will be greater wear and tear in the clothes. But more serious it is also less energy effective, because of the use of more water and electricity.

The front loading washing machine is popular in many European countries. And its popularity is also rising in USA. The reason is first of all because of the lower energy consumption.

The top loading washing machine uses up to 60 % more water and electricity compared to the front loading machine. So even though the front loader version is more expensive to buy, the savings can be huge in the everyday life.

Even with the same capacity the front loading type is smaller, sleeker and better looking than the traditional top loading washing machine.

But the frontloaded washing machine does also have its share of disadvantages. It is more expensive upfront than the top loader model. And it is also more difficult to load, which can be a problem for older people. The washing time is also longer (because it does not use an agitator).

So which type should you choose? Well, it depends. If you care for the environment (and your money) you should choose a frontloaded washing machine. It uses much less water and energy.

But if it is important to you, that you can wash quickly, the frontloading type is better for you. The same apply if you are older.
