What To Do When Your Kitten Has A Cold

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

If your kitten is sneezing and has a runny nose, there are quite a few things you can to do to make her better.

First of all isolate your poorly pet from any other animals that you may have. This will stop the fiction spreading to the other. Find a quiet area of the house for the kitten to recover, one where there won’t be much human traffic.

Kittens need to be kept warm anyway, but when they are poorly it is even more important. Wrapping your cat in a warm blanket is a good idea, but you must make sure that she doesn’t develop a fever. This best way to do this is to take her temperature regularly using rectal thermometer. As long as it stays below 103degrees f she’s ok. If it goes above get some advice from your vet.

Regular small meals throughout the day is the way to go food wise, but she must take in plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Giving her this with a dropper or syringe will get the liquid into her that she needs.

It’s easy to use these methods to administer liquids, but what if your puss is refusing to eat? A good tip is to try her with baby food of a chicken variety. Vitamin C is good for boosting the immune system, so if you have some of this mix it into her food

Change her bedding at regular intervals and make sure it is thoroughly disinfected before you use it again. All her toys should be cleaned and disinfected too. Just ensure the products you use aren’t phenol based, as this is poisonous to cats. Bleach is your best bet.

Keep her nose, mouth and eyes clean using a damp and warm cloth. If her nose is stuffy and she’s having trouble breathing through it, put a few drops of saline in each nostril then wipe them.

If you suspect your kitten is dehydrating, or has a fever and is getting worse instead if better, get her to see a veterinarian as soon as it is humanly possible.

Fun Activity For Your Summer Afternoon Through Berry Picking

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

When was the last time you went berry picking? Many people don’t realize that you can take a trip to a berry picking farm, and bring home the fruit that you pick. Come late summer, many varieties of berries are ready to be picked and this is the perfect time to plan your berry picking adventure.

Bring at least one bucket per person, including kids. If you plan on picking a large volume of berries, it is better to bring more buckets than you think you will need than to need more buckets and not have enough. Most berry picking farms ask that you bring your own buckets and will not have buckets available for use.

Summer berries include the popular strawberries and blueberries that are often featured at pick your own farms, as well as blackberries and raspberries. Sometimes blackberries and raspberries grow in the wild. If this is the case, and if the bushes are not on private property, these berries are also good for picking.

Berry picking can be messy business. Berry juice stains are nearly inevitable after a day at the berry picking farm. Don’t wear nice clothing that you will regret having stained. It’s likely that you and your kids will be sitting on the ground, on dirt and berries, while picking. Even if you think you can stay clean, better safe than sorry.

After you are done picking, bring your berries home. Be sure to wash them before eating. Then, all that is left is to decide what to do with them. You have many options:

Berries freeze well if enclosed in freezer bags or airtight containers. This is good information to have, in case you picked more berries than you can use before they spoil. Freeze what you can’t use right away, and with the rest of the berries, decide how best to serve them.

You can eat many berries raw or cooked, depending on your preference. Some people like to have them plain, or with a bit of cream or milk. Other people sprinkle them on cereals, or mix them into oatmeal. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your berries. Berries can be baked into muffins and breads, be cooked down into preserves, be used as a filler between layers in a cake, and be simmered and used as a glaze for cooking some meats especially pork. Most recipe sites will have plenty of options for using up your berries.

A last word of advice to make sure that your berry picking experience is a positive one - don’t forget your sunscreen and your hat! You will be picking outside in summer. Coming home with a stinging sunburn is no fun.

In addition to summer activities, this writer also regularly shares writing regarding general ledger accounts and inventory accounting software.

Burpee Seeds One Of The Oldest And Most Dependable Sources For Seeds In The US

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Burpee Seeds has been a family company in business since 1876. The company sells seeds to commercial growers, retail stores and home gardeners from its Warminster, Pennsylvania headquarters. It was founded by W. Atlee Burpee when he was only eighteen years old and stayed in family hands until it was purchased by General Foods. In 1988 it was bought back by the Burpee family and continues to be run by David Burpee, the son of the founder.

Atlee loved science but he did not want to become a physician as his father expected. Instead he liked to fiddle around with seeds trying to make new and improved vegetables and flowers. In 1888 he conducted tests with European vegetable seeds and tried to make them grow in the climate and soil of the United States. He developed Surehead cabbage and a bigger and tastier carrot he called Long Orange. Green beans grown at this time in history always had a sting that went down the pod that had to be removed before eating and he came up with one that no longer had that string. He enjoyed traveling around and finding people like him who were making better food products and when he found one he liked he bought it and sold it through his company.

Atlee died in 1915 and by that time his seed company was very popular sending out almost a million copies of the seed catalog per year. At this time many of his customers were farmers but home gardening was in style with the advent of the victory garden during the World Wars. Burpee seeds could be purchased mail order or from many local stores all over the country.

David Burpee also known as D. B. Began to experiment just like his father and he specialized in hybridization. He created the Double Hybrid Nasturtium first in 1934 and soon after he developed a marigold that was red and gold. This marigold is seen in almost every flower garden all over the US. D. B. Was instrumental in changing the look of sweet corn. Corn for livestock was yellow and sweet corn for human consumption was always white. He found a farmer that had mutated seed and created a yellow sweet corn that tasted great. Golden Bantam changed the look of sweet corn forever.

In the forties new and improved methods of making new varieties of plants came into being. One of these methods was to use a normally poisonous substance from autumn crocus in order to change the chromosome pattern of other plants. This caused different and vivid colors in some flowers including the snap dragon. Another flower that was changed in this manner was the black eyed Susan. From this process the Gloriousa Daisy was created.

In 1991 George J. Ball, owner of another seed company joined forces with D. B. Burpee and merged. This created the largest and most profitable seed testing lab in the US. Today the company sells over 1100 different kinds of seeds.

The popular Burpee catalog is on their website and is a free download and if you do not have internet or just want the feel of paper, it can still be ordered by mail. There are several sections to the catalog including vegetables and flowers and the well loved gardening supply section. Costs for all items run anywhere from 1 dollar to 50 dollars.

All Burpee products have a guarantee. They guarantee they will grow or work or they will give a full refund or replacement within a years time of purchase. They guarantee online transactions to be safe and if any charges to a credit card that you did not make will be taken care of 100% within the law. Burpee Seeds is one of the oldest and most dependable companies for garden supplies and seeds and without them and D. B. Burpee we would not enjoy most of the varieties of plants and vegetables we have today.

It will also mean that the ex-smoker will breathe in fresher air instead of cigarette smoke, which will mean less instances of coughing and breathlessness.

But with so many zombie movies to choose from, how can you be sure to satisfy your craving to watch the undead roam the Earth in search for victims? I have the solution. I recommend the remake of Dawn Of The Dead. This is a fantastic remake for many reasons, some of which I will discuss below.

The movie starts out with an fascinating opening which introduces the zombie strain. Some good of luxury terrestrial element has infiltrated the Earth, plus this contamination is quickly spreading amongst the inopportune inhabitants of our soon to be doomed planet. But there is one thing different around this Zombie film than most others. These zombies can run. Quick. Faster than you.

In about every other zombie show, the zombies were slow remarkable dullards that you could simply bash in the skull in require to escape. Even if the previous version of this film, now a classic, the zombies were simple enough to kill. Baseball bats, tennis rackets, golf clubs, anything was simple to sneak up behind them as well as immediately brain them to stifle them in their tracks.

Not so in this wonderful rebuild. These zombies are instant on their feet, so it is all you can perform to sprint away as immediate as you can. And just adore in the memorable original, our small group of survivors be taught their hideout is by no means everlasting. They want to find transportation, and get away from the promptly growing swarm of zombies who are outside, hungering for their flesh. In an escape influential of an academy award, our group finds transportation, plus gets out of the mall. The Money-Saving Benefits When You Download Internet Movies

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

People who got access to a reliable internet connection prefer to download internet movies than rent or watch in a cinema. This is not at all that surprising because of its many conveniences. And one of them is the money-saving advantage they get from downloading instead.

You don’t have to get out of the house anymore just to enjoy a movie. Otherwise, you need to pay for gas for your car to get to a rental shop or cinema. Or pay public transport fee taking the bus, taxi or subway. Besides, just imagine how much of a hassle it is to get out of the house again after you’ve just arrived from work.

If you watch a movie in a cinema, there are temptations to spend money more than just for the ticket. The popcorn and beverage stand sure will entice you to shell out some more for snack. When you’re at home, your snack is just a quick trip to the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Opting for renting DVDs at a rental shop, you also need to pay for some additional fees oftentimes. First is forgetting to return the titles on time. Sometimes it’s really hard to keep track of when you need to return the titles, especially if you rent frequently. Or sometimes you get stuck in heavy traffic on your way to the rental shop to return the DVDs.

Second is accidentally scratching or damaging the discs. Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, you tend to scratch the underside of the DVDs. Or sometimes you may unintentionally drop it to the floor. When you return them to the rental shop, you are going to be charged for the slip-up in handling them.

If you buy your own DVDs for collection, time will come when you need additional storage for them. So you need to buy a shelf or cabinet. Movies online are compressed and got small file sizes. Multiple flicks will fit onto a single DVD should you burn them. Or you can simply leave them stored on the hard drive of your computer for future viewing.

You don’t get your money’s worth when you’re dissatisfied with a movie you just have seen. This regardless if you rent, buy or watch in a cinema. But when you download them, the site offering them usually got user reviews or ratings for each movie. This way, you’re getting firsthand opinions before you actually get the titles.

Payment terms come differently, depending on your choice. If you can watch films only once in a while, you can benefit from something where payment is done per download. But if you like to watch movies a lot, going for the monthly payment terms is more suitable for you. You can download multiple movies as long as you stick to the limit.

When you list down all the costs, you can save a lot of money when you download internet movies instead. And not only that: you also save on time and energy. This can be an advantage if you got a busy schedule. But more than that, you get to enjoy blockbusters right in the privacy of your own home.

However, the free option also comes with a big list of problems and repercussions, which you should be warned about. The Chinese Lunar Calendar

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Prior to their adoption of the Western solar calendar system, the Chinese almost exclusively followed their own lunar calendar for working out the times of planting and harvesting and festival holidays. Although people in China today use the Western calendar for almost all business, governmental and practical matters of daily life, the old system still serves as the basis for determining many recurring holidays. This coexistence of two calendar schemes has long been accepted by the people of China.

However, this does not only happen in China, it also happens in most other Eastern countries, like Thailand, and most Arabic countries.

A lunar month is calculated by measuring the period of time needed for the moon to finish its full cycle of 29 and a half days, a standard that makes the lunar year a full 11 days shorter than its solar counterpart. This disparity is made up every 19 years by the addition of seven lunar months.

The 12 lunar months are further divided into 24 solar divisions characterized by the four seasons and times of heat and cold, all of which bear a close relationship to the yearly cycle of agricultural work.

The Chinese calendar - very much like the Hebrew calendar- is a combination of the solar and lunar calendars in that it attempts to have its years coincide with the tropical year and its months coincide with the synodic months. It is not surprising that a few similarities exist between the Chinese and the Hebrew calendar.

For instance, an average year has 12 months, a leap year has 13 months. An ordinary year has 353, 354, or 355 days, a leap year has 383, 384, or 385 days. When working out what a Chinese year will be like, one needs to make a number of astronomical calculations.

First of all, you have to work out the dates for the new moons. In these instances, a new Moon is the completely black Moon (that is to say, when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun), not the first visible crescent, as is used by the Islamic and Hebrew calendars. The date of a new moon is then the first day of a new month.

The reason why the majority of countries which had their own calendars had to dump them in favour of the Western, Julian calendar that we use today, is business. First the British and then the Americans ran international business and they used the Julian calendar.Anyone who sought to work with them had to follow suit. This is why national policy often varies from local custom in Third World countries.

The government desires to deal on the International markets, but the ordinary family in the country can not. So, the government adopted the Julian calendar but the people only pay lip service to it. I live in Thailand and people here do not even use the 24 hour day divided into two halves. Their day has four sections of six hours each and the first part starts at 6AM, not midnight. Therefore, they have four 4 o’clocks a day, for example but no 7 o’clocks. They are also 543 years ahead of us, although this is more common, for example in Muslim countries.

Book Review: Arctic Drift, by Clive Cussler

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt novels often focus on one or more current geopolitical events. The latest one, Arctic Drift, is no different, centering on a worldwide financial crisis in 2011, coupled with global warming woes.

The crook in Arctic Drift is a Canadian energy empire billionaire by the name of Mitchell Goyette who is publicly admired for his green technology businesses, while concealing his heavy involvement in natural gas and oil.

The United States faces a financial meltdown, aggravated by the threat of an international boycott if the country does not decrease its carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants. Canada holds the key to America’s salvation in the form or an enormous wealth of natural gas reserves.

The American president pins his hopes on Canadian natural gas to replace the coal used in many of the country’s electricity generating power plants, as well as the gasoline used in cars. The U.S. would thereby make substantial savings on expensive imported oil, while at the same time being able to meet the international demand to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.

This desperate American play gets exploited by the industrialist Goyette to the fullest. Officially, he is the hero of the green movement because of his heavy investments in wind power and carbon dioxide sequestering. Unofficially, he holds a major interest in the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta, as well as the entire Melville natural gas field in the Canadian Arctic.

The unconscionable Goyette strikes a deal with the American government to sell nearly limitless supplies of Melville natural gas at market value, which would help the U.S. avert the escalating energy crisis, a financial meltdown, and an international trade boycott. But when Goyette is able to secretly work out a better deal with China, he does not hesitate to break his agreement with the U.S. and leave the southern neighbor high and dry.

(In reality, it seems a little farfetched that the American government would not have had an iron-clad, legally binding, written contract in place for a deal of this magnitude and importance. But it makes for a good story.)

But Goyette’s double-dealing with China and the U.S. pales in comparison to some of his other crimes, which include political assassination, intentional dumping of toxic waste that kills humans and wildlife, theft, vandalizing, bribery of high ranking officials, and worst of all, nearly instigating a war between Canada and the U.S.

What Goyette does not count on, of course, is Dirk Pitt, the hero of 20 Clive Cussler books, including this latest installment. In the end, good prevails over evil.

Arctic Drift is a seamless joint effort between Clive Cussler and son, Dirk Cussler. It is difficult to tell their penmanship apart. Whatever sections of the book were written by Dirk Cussler, he did an outstanding job of emulating his father’s inimitable style. (Oxymoron intended!)

The book is an excellent and thrilling read; perhaps not cover-to-cover on-the-edge-of-your-seat excitement, as some of the older Dirk Pitt adventures. But the book makes up for it with a solid, steady and thoroughly enjoyable story that is brilliantly written, with thugs that are as sharp and capable as they are unscrupulous, and heroes as pure as Arctic ice.

Britt Hellman lives in Western North Carolina with her husband and three children. She runs her own copywriting company from home. Clive Cussler has been one of her favorite authors since she read his Trojan Odyssey, a Dirk Pitt Novel, in 2003. She writes reviews like this one on Arctic Drift for the fun of sharing that excitement.

How To Be A Mindful Traveler

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

These days, consumers are becoming more mindful about how their lifestyle affects the environment. For this reason, more people are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One such area that is seeing an increase in ‘green’ consumers is the travel industry. More travelers are now becoming more mindful of the environment when they travel.

The following are a number of ways to be a mindful traveler:

1. Make sure that you book a flight on an airline that recycles the refuse left from serving beverages and food to their passengers. To help offset your carbon emissions, consider direct flights to your destination.

2. When you book your hotel, consider smaller accommodations. For instance, a homestay is much smaller and cozier than a large hotel. If you stay in a big hotel, check to see if there are any ‘green’ hotels in the area. Eco-friendly hotels will have implemented such ‘green’ measures as water conservation programs, energy efficient appliances, recycle and composting programs, and energy reducing programs. They will also incorporate ‘green’ practices in guest rooms such as recycling baskets and shampoo and soap dispensers. You can also do your part by using the same towels and linens during your stay and turn off the air conditioner and lights when you are away from the room. As well, consider a longer stay. If you stay in one spot instead of traveling from one hotel or resort to another, you will be reducing your carbon footprint instead of taking more flights.

3. Instead of using a rental car in your destination area, take advantage of public transportation such as a bus or hotel van. Whenever possible, try walking. It is good for your health, the environment, and you can get an up-close and personal look at the community.

4. When you are out in the community, be sensitive, and ask permission to take pictures of the locals. When possible, eat foods that have been grown locally rather than eating foreign foods that have to be imported. Make sure that you do your research before you go on your trip. It will help prevent any misunderstandings and will help show your respect for local customs and dress. It is important to be generous such as giving good tips. Make sure you do not engage in excessive haggling so you do not upset any vendors.

Before you leave home, you can begin your trip being ‘green’ by turning off your lights, turning down the thermostat, and adjusting the air conditioner. During your flight and while staying at your destination, there are many things you can do to be mindful of the environment and people. Not only will you be doing your part to conserve and protect the environment, it will make your trip even more enjoyable and memorable.
