Interior Design Ideas

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Redecorating your house isn’t all that easy and it becomes even less so when you are stuck for ideas. The only way to really get over this problem in interior design ideas is to sit back, put your feet up and have a cup of coffee.

I’m not kidding, there’s no better way of getting a new perspective on things than taking a break from everything. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Once that you’re resting comfortably and are suitably relaxed, close your eyes and picture the room that you want to do up. Even if you are doing more than one room, it’s always a good idea to begin with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Before you begin your travel through the land of interior design ideas, get yourself a notebook and pencil so that you can write down any good ideas you have before they are forgotten

So, simply sit back and picture the room in your mind. Try to see it as you want it to look. And if that’s too difficult, first try to replace separate parts of your room or articles in it. This is always a good method of working. But, if you’ve still got a mental drought on interior design ideas, leaf through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least some basic ideas of what you can do to redecorate the room.

The interior design catalogues need not be anything more grand than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing pages. Then again, nowadays you also get specialist shops which deal only with redecorating. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the lack of interior design ideas, and can probably get you started again.

These stores will have decorated sets of several designs, offering you a good idea of what your room could look like if you bought those materials. However, if you’re going to go to one of those shops, expect to spend a bit of money, as no matter how much you try to keep a tight hand on your pocket, you’ll always find something you want to buy.

This is not necessarily a bad thing to do, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don’t need. And without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, this can prove to be disastrous. Not to worry though, if you keep your mental image in mind, you can go back home and make a start on redecorating your rooms the way you like.

And now that you’ve managed to get at least some interior design ideas of what your rooms should look like, your whole redecorating project should be that much easier and that much more fun.

Kitchen Decorating

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

It’s a Sunday morning and you’re sitting in the kitchen waiting for your coffee machine to stop its various gurgles and noises, so you can drink that vital early morning cup of coffee. Nonchalantly, you glance around your kitchen and notice a spot of paint missing from the corner of the door. It had happened years ago, but you never really paid any attention to it before now.

Your gaze continues to stray and your eye spots a patch of mildew growing under the sink, then you see the ugly brown colour that your ceiling has become right above where the cooker is.

The paint is faintly off colour, and the lone wall-papered wall is beginning to look outdated and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that some kitchen decorating is needed.

Where do you start though? And how soon can you get into it? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the little signs of decay that you had been quite successfully ignoring up until that day, you can’t wait to get started on modest kitchen decorating plans.

That however is where the crunch comes. Just how modest do you want to keep your kitchen decorating project? Can you get away with slapping a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the trouble of removing the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out where that mildew stain might be coming from.

It all depends on you and your budget, but if you have the time, energy and money, you’d probably be better off, in the long run. to solve all your kitchen decorating problems at once. That would include stripping off the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have them. However, if you’re going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating, you’ll also need that all important final coat of paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those tatty old curtains as they’re also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go on and splash out on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you’re at it, you should think of buying a new set of tea towels as well. It won’t hurt to go the whole hog while you can.

And when you’re finally finished, you will be able to sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You’ll have no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has provided you with a far better kitchen than you had ever hoped for.

A feeling of contentment flows through you as you lift your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying the fruits of your labour.

It’s probably safe to assume that by that point, you would have made up your mind whether you wanted to continue doing interior design jobs or not.

If you want, you also have the choice of attending an interior design college or taking some interior design courses to further your interior design interests. This is also a good way for you to test the water before you get in too deep. An added bonus with either of these options is that they can be accomplished with ease and shouldn’t present you with any problems.

Taking any of these courses will only enhance your natural abilities and bring to the fore any talent you have in the field of interior designing. This in turn makes it easier for you to go in for more interior design jobs by giving you a boost up the ladder so you’re better prepared to face whatever comes your way.

The hardest part will be taking that all important first step of leaving your nice safe job to go out into the unknown world of bidding for interior design jobs. The Benefits of Making Soda and Seltzer at Home

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

A long time ago, Joseph Priestly put carbon dioxide in water and invented the fizzy drink we’ve all come to love: seltzer or soda. It not only tastes great, but also quenches any ones thirst. Soda is also good for making ‘highballs’, and is a very convenient drink to have at home to offer unexpected guests.

Seltzer, whether plain or fortified with minerals, is easily available in the store. You will also find several carbonated beverages including flavored soda, diet soda and club soda. You can also make soda in the convenience of your home with a home soda maker.

Many people love to do things by themselves. They love to grind their own coffee beans, make syrups at home and even make their own lattes. Making soda at home with a soda machine is easy and a far cheaper and better environmental option.

You will find several appliances in the market for making seltzer. To make seltzer water, you need only a couple of things: A soda siphon or a seltzer bottle. It looks like a thermos bottle with an inherent spray mechanism and holds regular water. Chargers: These chargers are basically small metal containers with pressurized carbon dioxide in them. Soda chargers come with either screw-in or snap-on varieties. The type you need depends on the seltzer water bottle that you have.

You can also choose to carbonate water with improvised equipment and soda fountains. This involves getting the carbon dioxide gas supply from a tank through a regulator. It actually translates into getting carbonated water from a tap. Though the pressure of the gas plays an important role, it is better to pre-chill water, because the solubility of carbon dioxide increases if the temperature of the water is low.

Benefits of Making Carbonated Water at Home

- The biggest benefit of making soda at home with a soda machine is that you get carbonated water at a fraction of the price of bottled soda. - Commercial bottled soda loses its fizz once you open it. Making it at home allows you to make as much carbonated water as you need. - You can use a soda machine to make soda pop at home. - Making soda with soda makers is more hygienic. - You can also use your soda machine for making healthy soda drinks at home. Add a splash of any fruit that you like, or twist a lemon into it. - Making soda at home is also good for the environment. All those plastic bottles that you throw away are not recycled. Most end up in landfills where it takes thousands of years to decompose. - You also save a lot of water in the process. A lot of water is wasted in the purification process- almost two gallons for every gallon of water that is actually bottled. It is a reality that too much water extraction has led to water shortages near bottling plants.

Nearly 1.5 million tons of plastic is used in plants that supply 89 billion liters of aerated drinks each year. When you are making soda at home, you are not only saving yourself the trouble of lugging 2 liter bottles every time you need carbonated water, but you are also doing your own bit for saving this planet and making it a better place to live in.

Shower Curtains in Fabric

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

So, one day, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became all the rage. But, like most fads, common sense resurfaced and the fashions that once were, have come back as they do. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are easily available from most stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t rush to get rid of your old glass doors just yet. The cleanliness and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly established with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by them and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll find, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are complacent and will smile when questioned about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the benefits of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to discourage mould.

The biggest convenience of all, is the easy cleaning granted by glass shower doors. However, as the proponents of fabric shower curtains will also say to you, glass doors have their downsides as well, the biggest of which being that if you allow the cleaning of the doors to slide for even one week, dark stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have great determination.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular wipe-down, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will begin to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a contented grin on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one massive why fabric shower curtains are still a firm favourite with loads of people. Have you ever tried changing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within a span of five years, unless that is you take a very large sledgehammer to it by accident.

So, now you understand the reason behind that mysterious smile and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of style. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re thinking of swapping from your glass shower doors to the more convenient, disposable fabric shower curtains don’t be put off by having to get started

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become simpler, and if it’s not, just swap one pair of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel better!

To Drink Clean Water You Need The Best Water Filter.

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Deciding which is the best water filter isn’t easy, but if you’re worried about the quality of the water you drink then you really do have to put some thought into selecting the best water filter for your needs.

There’s a few things to take into account when you’re trying to work out which water filter to buy.

One of the most popular water filters is a carbon water filter, or what is also called an AC filter, or activated carbon filter.

And you also need to consider what type of system you need for your house. You can get faucet water filters or even water filters for the entire house. A whole house water filter can be ideal for anyone who wants to have clean water to wash in and shower in and to use for the clothes as well as drink. Whole house filters can come in different types, including carbon.

If it’s a simple filter you want just for your drinking water you have some options. These include pitcher filters, where you pour water in and it falls into a bowl at the bottom. Or you could get a water filter that goes right onto the faucet and you just turn it on and you’ve got clean water.

Pitcher filters are cheap but do have one drawback. They don’t hold much and the are slow. You pour the water in and it slowly filters through, but it takes a while until you have enough water for a drink.

These are just a few of the options for best water filters which are currently on the market. Before making the decision to purchase one that is right for your home, its important to take all of your available options into consideration. No matter what type of water filtration system you make the decision to use for the drinking water in your home, its important to make sure that it will benefit you the most.

Be sure to consider what impurities are affecting your home drinking water, and figure out which water filter system will be the most capable of ensuring that it will be safe for you to drink in the future!

Home Decor on the Cheap

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

If you’re redecorating your home, naturally you’ll want only the best. However, often you’ll find that the best comes with an expensive price tag attached to it as well. Unfortunately, many of us can’t afford to splash out on the finer things in life, especially if we’re redecorating our homes.

That’s when the many discount home decor stores will come to your aid. In these stores, you’ll find that sometimes, miracles can happen and that you’re actually getting those finer things at a fantastic discount price.

Some of the best discount home decor can be found at your local department stores. That’s probably the last place you’d think of looking for discounts but if you get the timing right, seasonal sales will drive the prices down to match discount store prices. Nothing gets better than that, especially if you don’t really want to spend hours going around searching for discount stores or warehouses.

Which brings us, naturally enough, to our next discount home decor shops - discount warehouses. In these you’re presented with a wide selection from which you can buy your discount home decor and fittings. These large warehouse stores are ideal if you’re happy spending the time browsing a little bit.

Be careful though, because if you buy from these discount warehouses, you’re quite likely to see your perfect picture hanging in your neighbour’s house too. You should also go prepared to keep a tight grasp on your wallet as some of the items will simply demand to be bought. In this case, you’ll find that the new discount home decor items you went in to buy, have multiplied substantially in number before you come back out.

Another good option, and one which I constantly use, is the Internet discount stores. Just type in the words “Discount Home Decor” into any Internet search engine and it will yield such a large number of results that you might even become inundated.

The best way to deal with this is just to look through a few of the returned results and find a store that you like. As you go along, you can always cull the most of the stores and find ones that suit your requirements more exactly.

The Internet option is also very good, if you decide to look through your local department store’s Internet web site as well. Often, you’ll find a variety of items at discount store prices that you wouldn’t se at the store itself.

Delivery charges for home decor items bought over the Internet is usually very low or even free if you spend over a certain sum.

Any or all of these methods is a great way to begin your redecorating project and you’ll discover that, with only a little effort and thought on your part, you can find discount home decor items that will not only suit your budget but which will also suit your home, and ultimately, that’s all that really matters, isn’t it?

What Exactly Are Organic Coffee Beans/

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Environmental awareness has awakened the sense in consumers to preserve the resources supplied by mother nature. What better consumable to start the earth saving project of organic farming with than growing of organic coffee beans?

The largest producers of organic coffee beans are located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the African continent. Coffee trees grow abundantly under a tent formed by tall growing banana trees. This method of mixed planting is used to shield the coffee trees from harsh weather conditions while allowing the necessary amount of sunlight and rain to penetrate. The coffee trees are mulched and composted by mother nature via falling leaves from the coffee tree itself as well as that of the banana trees. Natural mulching and compost means natural moisture retention and high soil quality. For the organically certified farmers to comply with prescribed standards only natural, organic-based pesticides may be used.

The popularity of the coffee bean is astonishing as it is ranked second in terms of world trade with oil at the number one spot. These small green seeds have a retail market of an estimated Seventy Billion US Dollars. In the past, pricing of beans where haunted by significant drops and rises caused by super sensitivity to volatile conditions in the market. The impact of world recessions on bean prices have been eliminated by the fixing of minimum prices.

When harvest time arrives, ripe berries are plucked from the tree with care as the tree only yields an estimated 2.20 lbs beans per year. The berries are soaked in water to soften the outer pulp. Residual pulp is removed until the coffee beans are clearly visible. The beans are then left to dry in the sun. Dried beans are sacked and weighed. Specially designed areas are allocated for organic products in each country of origin. Beans are auctioned and shipped to various destinations across the world.

A downside to organic produce is the scarcity of the products. Organic foods have a tendency to be associated with higher prices to consumers due to the products’ steeper pricing in relation to conventional products. Prices are higher due to various direct and indirect influences such as low yields, higher labor requirements, business start-up financing and additional land needs.

Farmers of organic coffee beans have strict guidelines to following. The guidelines are prescribed by relevant Independent organic certifying organizations, Fair Trade and KNCU. These rules and regulations are drafted according to international supply standards. Compliance with these organizational requirements is a feather in the hat of the farmer as he or she knows the organic produce planted and cared for on his farm meets high international standard.

Farmers of organic coffee beans and their nations make a commitment to changing their lives for the better by taking positive actions in countries often labeled as third world. By participating in farming of organic coffee beans, these farmers are helping to build up their communities, establish better health care and education opportunities as well as creating brighter economic futures.

If you are looking at gaggia platinum vision you should start to think if you will use them at home. With every shiny new thing it may seem With a great idea but if you aren’t going to use them then dont buy. Home coffee machines

Benefits Of An Infrared Trash Can

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Some of us take ?cleanliness is godliness? to heart. Everyone knows, or is someone like this. The person who is fast and loose with the hand sanitizer, the one who insists on doing the dishes right after dinner, the one who washes his or her hands after using a tissue.

You know the type. The people who hold in their sneezes (at what cost to their brain I know not), or who distribute hand sanitizer at restaurants. These people are neurotic about their trash, and hate to be near it.

There?s a step available towards assuaging your neuroses, though. It?s called the infrared trashcan. If you can?t bear to have your hand near your trash, as it must be with lift tops and foot-pedal varieties (the latter of which always break after a few weeks, thus turning them into the former), then the infrared trash can is for you. It opens when your hand is a few inches over its lid, which completely removes you from the equation. You?re nowhere near your trash, and therefore don?t have to worry about being contaminated by all that bacteria.

There is not a lot of price difference in touchless trashcans. Cheaper ones are just under $100 while more expensive ones are just over $100. The main difference between these varieties is that the cheaper ones have lids that lift and the more expensive ones slide across. With a price difference of only $20-$30, you may as well spring for the sliding lid, as it conserves space and looks more attractive.

Price differences are not large, with some costing just under $100 and some costing just over $100. The difference is small but fundamental ? the cheaper ones have flip-top lids, while the more expensive ones have sliding lids. Unless you?re on a very tight budget, you would be best-served to splash out for the sliding lid. It?s less likely to break, looks classier, and conserves on space.

Finally, if you?re going for a futuristic interior design scheme, with stainless steel and the like, an infrared trash can can be just what you need to bring it all together and make your kitchen truly Jetsons-esque. All you need now is a robot.

Need a trash can? Check out this outdoor trash can and cabinet trash can guide.

Go Green With the Way You Clean (And Save Money in the Process)

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

When it comes to using green cleaning products as a way of helping our environment, there is a wide range of opinion. Many of us think that they are just too expensive to both with, but in truth we are probably wasting our money on the products we currently use.

It only takes a few simple ingredients to clean all of the different areas around the home. And it doesn’t take long to make your own green cleaning products from scratch, which really won’t cost you much at all.

What’s Wrong With Traditional Cleaning Products?

There is actually no law forcing manufacturers to label all of the ingredients that go into our cleaning products, which is why it’s very shocking to hear that a number of the ingredients haven’t even been tested for safety on humans!

And, what’s worse, is that we are indirectly taking these products into our system. For example, when we spray our surfaces we breathe the ingredients in. And we also absorb all of the ingredients of our laundry detergents through the clothes we wear every day.

These ingredients are then sent into the environment through our water. The truth is these chemicals are not necessary for effective cleaning, so we don’t need to use them anymore.

A Healthy Alternative

If you want to start going green today then I am not about to tell you to go out and buy the most expensive products. Wait a while until you’ve used up the products you do have, and then set aside the plastic spray bottles they come in so that they can store the recipes you make yourself.

Some of the most popular ingredients to use include lemon juice, since it’s antibacterial. You can also use vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, which are very powerful for a wide range of cleaning applications.

You might not want to make all of your cleaning products from scratch, in which case you can look for eco-friendly brands in stores. They might be more expensive, but try buying in bulk, or opting for laundry detergents that will last for hundreds of uses.

If you want to go green you don’t have to change everything straight away. Start with your laundry, then move onto another area of your life. Before you know it you’ll never know why you relied on those toxic cleaning products!

Eco friendly cleaning isn’t as difficult as it might first seem. I’ve found many different simple recipes and natural cleaners to help make it easier for me to start going green.
