Electrical goods stores are another option to consider, as they might have spare boxes from display items or damaged goods. Alternatively, you can just hit the trash. When you are out searching for boxes, be sure to check for potential sources closest to you. Check with your friends or neighbors if any of them have used moving boxes to spare. Your office could also have some to supply. Check with the shipping division or simply take leftovers from the storage room or make use of photocopy paper boxes that are usually thrown away. Of course, be sure to clear it with your boss first.

How An Organic Wool Mattress Pad Will Give You Uninterrupted Sleep

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

We all love to sleep on a soft, comfortable mattress, we wake up feeling rejuvenated and fresh to meet our demanding schedules. What is probably the worst one can do, is sleep on a mattress which is hard and numbs your hips and elbows to such an extent that it cuts off circulation while you sleep. This is why you need an organic wool mattress pad to relieve you of your aches and pains.

But many people don’t know the difference between organic verses synthetic fibers. Organic means that sheep are being fed on free range pastures and when it comes time to shear their wool and process it, it is done without chemicals like bleach, or any kind of solvents. So by far the best type of quilting or mattress padding to sleep on would be those of organic origin.

On the other hand, a synthetic fiber mattress is manufactured using plastic substances and harsh chemicals. These fibers are thus unnatural to sleep on as they do not offer any protection against perspiration and allergies.

But take organic wool for instance, here each strand of fiber has a natural coat of lanolin around it, which gives us protection against allergies especially in the form of dust mites. So not treating it with chemicals helps us save money in the long run on medical bills.

It is a fact that wool is more comforting to lie on. It is a great insulator which helps our body to naturally regulate it’s temperature during the sleeping process. It lends heat for the winter and during the summer months you won’t feel sweaty as with the synthetic types of mattress pads. What this equates to is that you will not have to shift and turn to feel comfortable so the body get’s it’s uninterrupted rest.

When you are ready to buy your organic mattress pad, make sure that it is certified organic and not “natural” or “pure”. Although it sounds right, it is actually not correct, it must say “organic”. Then only will you get value for your money because some wools are still dyed with chlorine even though it says “natural”.

For an informed decision therefore, you should be cognizant of the fact that cotton fiber as opposed to woolen fiber is not the best choice to make. Cotton will become lumpy after a while as it packs because of compression from our bodies. The reason for this is because cotton attracts moisture. So for years of comfort and allergy free sleeping the only choice would be an organic wool mattress pad.

Use Organic Pesticides Instead Of Chemicals

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Although people are aware of the health dangers of pesticides, there is almost 1 billion pounds of these dangerous pesticides used in the United States each and every year. The worst part is these numbers are not lowering.

Now everybody knows that foods that are in the grocery stores has been washed before they arrive at the store. And many people will still wash there fruits and veggies after they but them. However there are still trace pesticides that are being consumed from these fruits and vegetables, which are causing health issues.

These pesticides are also causing health problems with the farmers and there workers. Every year there are over 10,000 pesticide related illnesses reported, and this is only the ones that have been reported. Even the EPA says that this is becoming a major issue.

Larger still are the hazards to pets. According to the American Society for the Prevention of cruelty to animals, there are over 30 thousand pet poisonings caused by pesticides each and every year. These numbers are produced by the animal poison control center.

One of the main causes is normal everyday people. The problem is that when we see a weed on our driveway the first thing we do is to grab a bottle of weed spray that is full of chemicals, and many people will even use chemicals as a preventative measure.

One of the main health issues is that pesticides have been know to cause or contribute to, Parkinson’s disease, cancer and even certain birth defects in our children. What I don’t understand is that with all the evidence out there people continue to use theses pesticides.

One would think that the government would step in and create laws to help regulate pesticides even more. Did you know that pesticide companies don’t even have to test there products meant for home use with the same standards as products for commercial use??? This means that home pesticides can actually be worse for you than commercial pesticides.

Now it is bad enough that these pesticides are harmful to people and animals, but what about our planet. These chemicals contaminate the air, water and soil. Which means that not only people and there pets are effected, but also insects that we need like honeybee’s and ladybugs. And if you have well water… these pesticides can seep into your well.

The best bet for you and your neighbors is to learn how to combat pests without the use of chemicals. This will help you health and that of your pets and neighbors as well. And not to mention “Mother Earth”.

Natural Fertilizer Options for the Organic Gardener

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

If you are looking for free or cheaper organic materials to make use of as natural fertilizer, you need only to look at the things piling up in your own plot (leaves, droppings and manure to name a few). All the ingredients for an organic fertilizer system are obtainable to you if you look closely. Finding suitable organic material is a challenge you will take pleasure in, particularly in the fall when fallen leaves simply pile up ready to be turned into natural fertilizer for the coming of planting season.

All organic materials qualify as natural supplements. You simply need to process these to create a complete fertilizer containing all three of the main nutrient elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These minerals get liberated into the soil when the ingredients rot.

Animal manure is a natural fertilizer, but it has erratic mineral levels. Animals that have been nourished with feed deficient in some necessary minerals will produce droppings that will not do much for crops. In addition, pasture gardeners are advised not to make use of any type of chemicals that could disrupt an animal’s diet to make sure the resulting compost is free from the same chemicals. These facts should guide you on how to qualify the manure you are going to use as a supplement.

You can use fresh dung on your plants, but the salinity levels in fresh manure are high. Composted manure has less minerals in comparison to the fresh counterpart, but nitrogen concentration in composted manure can be saved by mixing it with soil.

If you live near the coastline, you might want to try turning seaweeds into organic garden supplements. Take the seaweed that has washed up on the seashore and turn it into compost. It might help keep the soil salinity percentage low if you wash the seaweeds thoroughly before usage.

One of the finest fertilizers you can use is fish emulsion. This fertilizer is made from fish residue, so you can get this directly from fish processing businesses.

If you have a lot of fallen leaves on the ground, you can add those to your compost pit for fertilizer production. You need to put simply enough fallen leaves in your compost pit for the leaves to decay gradually.

Compost improves soil acid base ratio and enhances the over-all nutrient concentration of your soil. Compost comprises a mixture of nutrients and decaying plant and animal residue.

You can add wood ash to your compost pile in small quantities. This organic fertilizer is a great source of potassium.

Common Sense Organic Food Shopping

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

More than ever before, people are paying attention to what they eat. Years ago, few people knew the words organic, natural, free range or hormone free in respect to food. They just did not give it a second thought. Now, however, people are taking these words to the store and coming home with different products. In addition, people now want to find these words when they dine out. For reasons of both budget and availability, it is important for the consumer to note that all organic foods are not equal in overall benefit.

According to the U.S.D.A, in order for any food to be labeled as “USDA organic” certain standards must be met. These standards are usually related to the growing, production or manufacturing process involved. A true organic food may have no ingredients that are synthetic such as pesticides or residue of fertilizers. At least 95% of what goes into an organic food must also be organic. Animals from which products are derived must never have been given growth hormones or antibiotics. If a food is labeled “Made with Organic Ingredients”, only 70% of the ingredients must be organic.

The quality of food grown at local farms is likely to be higher than that of food that has been grown thousands of miles away and thus handled more before it reaches the local markets. Shipping from long distances raises the chances of the food losing some of its best organic benefits in transit. Nutritionists are big proponents of buying organic in order to avoid the high pesticide levels in products that are grown or produced commercially.

Fruits grown commercially that have been shown to contain the higher amounts of pesticides are cherries, imported grapes, pears, strawberries and raspberries, apples, and peaches. Celery, potatoes, spinach, bell peppers, and hot peppers are vegetables that, when not grown organically, contain high pesticide levels. With this in mind, the smart decision would be to buy the organically grown versions of these products, despite the higher price.

The fruits found to contain the lowest levels of pesticides are pineapples, plantains, mangoes, bananas, watermelon, plums and kiwis. The vegetables found to contain the lowest levels of pesticides are cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, radishes, broccoli and onions. If on a tight budget, these foods provide a safer alternative when purchasing commercially produced products. Consumers should note that this is not the final word on the above products, but more a matter of the degrees of risk with these products versus those with higher pesticide levels.

It is easy to find tips online or elsewhere when looking for the best products in cookware or kitchen gadgets. Shopping for organic food usually requires a little more thought. The decision as to what organic foods to buy is a personal one based on individual tastes and budget. But the smart shopper should make a point of finding out what things have an effect on the quality of an organic product and what organic foods provide the best benefits. A choice to switch to organic should always be based on the facts.

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

A lot of people do not even realize that they could be saving money by buying used moving boxes. When it comes time to move to a new house or office it is already expensive so when there is a chance to save money that is always a good thing. Does it really matter if the boxes you pack with are new or used? If the box you buy is good quality it should not matter if it is used because you will just throw it away once your done with it anyway.

The companies that have used “moving boxes for sale usually have employees that make sure the boxes are of good quality before you purchase it. These used boxes will be as sturdy as new ones but will not cost you as much. When you are packing your important belongings you just want to be sure they do not get damaged. Many people assume new boxes will protect their belongings better.

When you pack correctly your belongings will not get damaged no matter what box you use. When you do not pack right the box will not keep your things safe even if it is new. It is always important that you pack with care. If you pack with care your things will arrive undamaged.

When packing your breakable belongings you should be sure to follow the basic rules for packing. Your fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap. Bubble wrap can be bought in rolls usually at the same company that you buy your boxes from. Many people use newspaper to wrap their breakable items but bubble wrap is safer.

Another great way to keep your fragile items from banging into each other and getting damaged is with packing peanuts. The same company that you buy your boxes and bubble wrap from will also have packing peanuts. Most companies that you can purchase moving supplies from will usually have all the packing essentials you need.

You should also be sure to label the boxes when packing so you can unpack quicker once you are moved. Moving is a very tiring ordeal and you should not add to your work load. You will not have to spend a lot of time looking through the boxes to locate things if you have labeled your boxes.

Some people spend extra money on new boxes that have a designated place to write what is in the box. I do not understand why this is important when you can just grab a marker and write any where you want to on a box. I prefer to buy the cheapest boxes I can as long as they are in good condition.

When you save money your whole moving experience can be less stressful. We all worry over enough things when we have to move so why should we add to our stress by paying more for new boxes? Everyone likes to save money so why not make yourself happy by buying used boxes and saving money?

Need boxes for moving? Why not try using recycled boxes, or even used shipping boxes! They’re much cheaper, and much more environmentally friendly too.
