Wind energy has been used for many years as individuals have used wind power for sailing, wind mills for manufacturing and pumping water and more recently conversion into electricity using wind turbines. It is projected that the amount of power that could be harnessed form the wind is more than the human population currently uses. So just think about having almost cost free power.

The amount of power that is generated by the wind is dependent on the speed and as the wind speed doubles the amount of power produced increases eight fold. However there is a cap as wind turbines can only go so fast and generate so much energy. You do not need high winds at all time though as a lot of energy can still be produced with 15 mph breezes. As such, wind power is a valuable method for alternative energy.

The main issue with wind energy is storage as wind power cannot be dispatched at different times but needs to be used immediately. Many companies have looked into different types of batteries, storing it within the energy grid and even hydroelectricity. Many times surplus energy from domestic wind turbines are fed back into the electrical grid and the energy company will purchase this energy and you will receive electricity credits.

Present-Day And Future Alternative Energy Sources

The major past energy sources have included petroleum and coal. Will Texas Wind Energy Be The New Petroleum?

You’ve no doubt been hearing plenty about wind energy as of late. Unless you happen to live there though, what you might not know is that wind power is already being used to meet a sizeable portion of energy needs in some parts of the country. In Texas, there are even oil tycoons and energy industry players not normally associated with renewable energy who are beginning to get into wind power. GE has a one and a half billion dollar contract to supply turbines and maintenance for an Oregon wind farm over the next decade, a project expected to create about four hundred and fifty jobs. T. Boone Pickens, Texas oilman, is getting behind wind power in his state, and wind farms are popping up all over in the American Midwest. That’s because wind is worth a lot of money right now.

At present, the US imports nearly 70% of its oil, something which should worry anyone who would prefer that the nation be less dependent on foreign energy suppliers. This along with an increasing awareness of the environmental benefits of wind energy are filling the sails (if you’ll forgive the pun) of the wind power movement. Along with wind, natural gas is receiving a greater degree of interest either as an alternative to wind or a complementary homegrown energy source.

There are already parts of Texas where you can drive for over a hundred miles and see wind turbines everywhere. Not everyone is enamored of how these structures look, but many look at these turbines as the future of US energy independence. In Nolan County, Texas alone, there are around 1,500 wind generators, accounting for around $5 billion worth of wind power infrastructure. This single Texas county generated more wind power annually than is produced in the state of California.

This isn’t the only area of Texas which is experiencing a boom in wind power. The Rolling Plains near Abilene has 2,000 turbines in use; the Permian Basin area close to Midland and Odessa is home to 3,000 turbines with a generation capacity of 6,000 megawatts. Turbines are being built all over the state, with as many as four per day going up in some parts of Texas.

Wind power offers a renewable, clean alternative to natural gas and other fossil fuels as a means of producing electrical power. It produces no pollutants and with even oilmen like Pickens lining up alongside environmentalists to help reduce the environmental impact of energy production and reduce US dependence on foreign energy suppliers, it’s a technology with a bright future. Alongside solar energy systems, wind energy has the potential to meet a large portion of the country’s energy needs.

Is wind a viable alternative for all our energy needs? It depends on who you talk to. However, one thing is sure. Wind is booming all over the country, and producing a lot of energy. It’s definitely worth a look!

An Introduction To Wind Power

With so many people starting to understand the benefits of going green, there is a sudden interest in wind power but not too many people really know what it is all about. Wind power is simply using wind to make energy like electricity by the use of wind turbines.

While wind power is a promising source for and inexhaustible supply of clean energy, it makes up only 1.5% of the total electrical supply worldwide. However, it is becoming a more important part of the global energy picture every year.

With the increasing awareness of the benefits offered by wind power and of course, the peril we place our very planet in by not switching to alternative energies, wind power becomes a more and more attractive energy source. Some countries have made more progress than others - for example, Denmark currently produces nearly a fifth of their electricity from wind power.

Spain and Portugal use wind power for about 11% of their electricity supply; and Ireland and Germany get about 7% of their electricity this way. Wind power has been known for many centuries for a variety of purposes, but it is only fairly recently that this old technology has been repurposed towards generating electricity.

Even though a lot of people would complain about the look of the wind farms, calling them unsightly, there are many benefits that should be considered before passing up the idea simply because the wind farms do not look pretty. Wind power is renewable, plentiful, clean, widely distributed, and it does not produce as much greenhouse gas emissions then the other routes that are taken to produce electricity.

There is even more that wind power may be able to do besides powering our homes and businesses. A car has been built which uses wind power and can reach speeds of more than 100 mph! While these cars won’t be on the consumer market for at least a few years yet, this is a very exciting application for wind power.

The car uses a battery (which is solar powered) to start, but once started it can run on the energy generated by the circulation of air through the car. It seems that wind power has even more uses than anyone thought. With the potential to power not only our homes but also our cars, it seems that there are no good arguments to be made against the use of wind power.

Of course, some who live near a wind farm do have some complaints about the noise, but other neighbors of wind farms shrug it off, saying that these wind power plants produce less noise than a herd of sheep or cows would.

Whether wind farms or regular farms are noisier is a matter of debate. However, it is hoped that adopting this alternative energy will be done in the interests of society and protecting the environment, rather than on the basis of what the neighbors will think.
